What Is Natural Burial?
Natural burial is a return to the original form of burial — one that existed long before modern mortuary practices introduced embalming, synthetic materials, and permanent structures. It is simpler, but no less dignified.
In a natural burial, the body is not treated with chemical preservatives. Instead, it is cared for with natural methods and placed in a biodegradable container — such as a simple wood casket, a wicker basket, or a burial shroud made from natural fibers. No concrete vault or burial liner is used, so the ground remains undisturbed and the burial site can return fully to the landscape over time.
Natural burials typically take place in a designated natural burial area or a cemetery with a dedicated green section that prioritizes land stewardship. The setting often feels more like a natural landscape than a conventional cemetery — intentionally understated, with the surroundings doing most of the honoring.
The process involves the same thoughtful, personal care as any burial we arrange. Families are guided through each step, and the simplicity of the approach in no way diminishes the attention we bring to it.
