William "Bill" C.
Mortensen
September 7, 1953 – September 27, 2025
William "Bill" Mortensen, 72, of Lake Villa, IL, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, September 27, 2025, surrounded by his beloved family.
Born on September 7, 1953, in Davenport, Iowa, Bill was the cherished son of the late Leroy "Bud" and Mildred "Millie" (née Hansen) Mortensen. He spent his early years on the family farm in Durant, Iowa, where he developed a strong work ethic and deep appreciation for family and community—values that would shape his entire life.
As a young man, Bill moved to the Quad Cities area, where he married, began his engineering career, and started a family. He later settled in Round Lake, IL, where he raised his three sons with unwavering love and devotion. Bill was a fixture on the baseball fields, coaching his boys' teams and serving as a surrogate father to many in the neighborhood. His warmth, humor, and mentorship left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
Professionally, Bill built a successful career as an engineer with North American Corporation in Glenview, IL, balancing his work with his role as a dedicated father and community leader.
In later years, Bill made his home in the Fox Lake Hills subdivision, where he became a pillar of the community. For over 25 years, he served on the Fox Lake Hills Homeowners' Association board, tirelessly maintaining the many beautiful parks, Bayview Park and Harbor beach, and fostering a spirit of togetherness. His commitment and larger than life presence resulted in the admiration of neighbors and lifelong friendships.
Bill's passions were simple but rich: boating on the Chain of Lakes, riding his Harley, walking the neighborhood, and relaxing on his deck overlooking the beach and park he helped care for. He was the life of every party, a total prankster, and above all, a devoted family man whose love for his friends and family knew no bounds.
Those who knew Bill will forever remember his signature phrase—"Life is Good"—a motto he lived by every single day.
Survivors include his spouse, Joyce (nee Holden), whom he married September 2, 2006; children, Vann (Alexis) Thomas, Jason (Stacey) Mortensen, Jeff (Jackie) Mortensen, and Dawn (Jimmy) Alexander; grandchildren, Ethan, Rayne, Zoey, Raymond, Kyle, Jacob, Hayden, Hailey, Jocelyn, Brianna, and James; siblings, Sue (Don) Floyd, Mary Mortensen, and Betty (Marv) Nelson; and many wonderful friends and extended family members.
In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by siblings, Leroy (Debbie) Mortensen and Lois (Mike) Spanich.
A celebration of life event will be held honoring Bill in June 2026 at the Mortensen Pavilion at the BayView Park and Harbor in Fox Lake Hills. The exact date will be provided later, so please check back for updates.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made in Bill's honor to Reach Rescue , the American Cancer Society , or any hospice foundation of your choice.
