Richard E. Wend 88, a resident of Fox Lake since 1976 and former resident of Chicago passed away Sunday, October 25, 2009 at Fair Oaks Nursing Home in Crystal Lake. Richard was born June 7, 1921 in Chicago to Henry and Elsie (nee Braeutigam) Wend. He was a former employee of General Electric Co. in Chicago & Milwaukee and then of Heyco Manufacturing Co. in Waukesha, WI retiring in 1976. After his retirement Richard became very active with the Fox Lake Library and was a Library Trustee. He served as Board Treasurer for many years, was a longtime member of its volunteer organization, "Friends of the Fox Lake District Library" through which Richard coordinated and worked on library book sales. He had a love of books as well and was an avid reader. He was an active & longtime volunteer for Volo Bog and a member of "Friends of the Volo Bog". He was an avid amateur astronomer whose friend, Clyde Tombaugh, discovered the planet Pluto. He will be dearly missed by his sisters: Doris (Allen) Magnuson of Elmhurst; Vanita Park of Bradenton, FL; His nephew: Mike (Pam) Magnuson of Crystal Lake; His niece: Amanda (Tom) Bosco of Villa Park; By several great nieces, nephews as well as other relatives also survive. And by his very dear friend of many years, Dr. Roger Kolman of Glen Ellyn. He was preceded in death by his parents and by a brother in law: Charles J. Parker. Visitations will be Thursday, October 29 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at K. K. Hamsher Funeral Home, 12 N. Pistakee Lake Rd in Fox Lake where a Funeral Service will be conducted at 10:00 A.M. on Friday. Burial will follow at Mt. Emblem Cemetery in Elmhurst, IL. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations for either the Fox Lake Library or the Friends of the Volo Bog.
