Marguerite (Marg) Soderman (nee Johnston), 91, of Lake Villa, IL peacefully
passed away Sunday, December 3, 2023. She was born April 9, 1932 in Rockford,
IL, to the late Amzi and Clara (nee Peters) Johnston of Byron IL.
She attended Byron Grade School graduating in 1946. Marguerite also attended
Byron High School graduation in 1950 with an Annual Citizenship Award of the
Daughters of the American Revolution, Honor Senior, Spanish Club Secretary,
Girls Athletic Assn President, School Newspaper News Editor, Yearbook Business
Manager, and participated in both Girls and Mixed Chorus.
Marguerite continued her academia by attending Eureka College in Eureka, IL. She
graduated with a bachelor's degree in English and Journalism in 1955 where she
was the vice president of Delta Zeta Sorority, Alpha Epsilon Sigma Honorary
Dramatic Fraternity, Delta Beta Delta Honorary Journalism Fraternity,
Homecoming Chair 1952, Editor of the school year book, and Assistant Editor of
the School Newspaper.
While at Eureka College, she met Walter Soderman and they married in November
of 1953. After raising 5 children to school age she then began her career as a
substitute teacher. Marguerite went on to become a grade school teacher at Shady
Lane School (now Stanton Public School) in Fox Lake, IL for 19 years, retiring in
1989. She thoroughly enjoyed her students and teaching. In retirement, she
enjoyed being a part of the retired teacher association group and chaired the
roadside pick-up for many years.
Marguerite attended Byron United Church in Byron, IL and raised her family at
Good Shepherd Lutheran Church Lake Villa, IL.
In her free time, Marguerite liked to spend time at her cabin in Minnesota. She
enjoyed reading books, bird watching, crossword puzzles, watching Jeopardy, and
fishing. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her family and friends;
especially her grandchildren. She planned many adventures to stay involved in all
of her grandchildren's lives.
Survivors include her children: William "Buzz" (Ann) Soderman, Diane Kanda,
David (Paula) Soderman, Robert (Ann) Soderman; and Margo (Cornel/Bo) Savala.
Grandchildren: Dustin (Brittany) Soderman, Summer (Austin) Rentsch, Sarah
Kanda, Kristine and Lauren Soderman, RJ (Alyssa) Soderman, Michele (Tyler)
San Agustin, Alexandra (James) Savala-Bray, Samantha, and Nicolas Savala.
Great grandchildren: Stella, Jameson, Emma, and Natalie Soderman.
She is also survived by: her brother-in-law, William "Bill" Fruin; and nieces and
nephews: Jennifer (Rob) Diehl, William (Christine) Fruin, Stephanie (Isaiah)
Johnson, Scott (Teri) Fruin, and Peter (Bambi) Fruin.
And cherished friend since childhood, Dixie Lindsey.
In addition to her parents, Marguerite was preceded in death by her husband Walter
of 40 years and sister, Jeanie Fruin.
A memorial/celebration of Marguerite's life will be held at Trinity Evangelical
Lutheran Church, 25519 West Illinois Route 134, Ingleside, IL with Pastor Ann
Gonyea officiating at 11:00am on January 6, 2024. There will be no visitation and
interment will be private.
