John “Jack” W. Lumber, 89, a lifelong resident of Ingleside, passed away Thursday, April 30, 2026, at Story Point Senior Living, Libertyville. He was born October 2, 1936, in Waukegan, to the late Frank “Bud” and Evalyn (nee Amann) Lumber.
John was raised in Ingleside and graduated from Grant Community High School in 1954. He received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in History from Marquette University. John had a long career in education beginning at Gavin Central Grade School, then North Chicago High School, and finally as an instructor of history at College of Lake County, from which he retired as Dean of Social Sciences in 2001. He also served on the Board of Trustees for the College of Lake County from 2007-2013.
An avid reader, history buff, traveler, and gourmet food and wine aficionado, he was best known for his generosity. John was an ardent supporter of the Grant Township Food Pantry, V Foundation, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and Junior Diabetes Research Foundation/Breakthrough T1D. John also provided for two endowments at College of Lake County.
Survivors include his sister, Mary Lee Olander; sister-in-law, Barbara Lumber; longtime partner, Evelyn Schiele; nephews and niece, Richard (Judith) Van Kirk; Therese (Kent) Hamilton, Scott Van Kirk, James (Julie) Lumber, and Robert Lumber; and numerous grandnieces and grandnephews.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his son, John J. Lumber on June 7, 2017; siblings, Charlene Van Kirk and F. James Lumber; and nephew James Van Kirk.
Memorial visitation Friday, May 15, 2026, from 10 a.m. until the start of the memorial service at 10:30 a.m., at Ingleside UMC/Joyful Spirit Church, 36325 N. Maple Ave., Ingleside. Burial will be in Grant Cemetery, Ingleside.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in John’s name to one of his aforementioned favorite charities, appreciated.
