Catherine Marie Mantonya, 95, of Fox Lake since 1992, died August 8, 2023, at The Cottages of Fox Lake; she was born March 18, 1928, to William and Flora (nee Hummel) Mantonya. She attended Stone and Jamieson Elementary Schools, was a 1946 graduate of Amundsen High School and received her BA from North Park College in 1950, all in Chicago.  She later earned a Master's Degree from National College of Education.  Catherine was, above all, a teacher.  As a public school educator she taught elementary school in Beloit, WI 1950-1955; at Dawes Elementary School in Evanston 1955-1987; and as an elementary science assistant for Evanston/Skokie District 65 1987-1992.  A lifelong Lutheran, she was an active and devoted congregant of both St. Philip Lutheran Church, Chicago and Evangelical Lutheran Church of All Saints, Fox Lake.  For a total of 70+ yrs. at these churches she taught Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, confirmation classes, assisted acolytes, and was involved with the choirs. Catherine also volunteered for many years at Volo Bog. Survived by nephews, George, Bob, and Richard Capps; nieces, Carol Leight and Wendy Stecher; great-nieces, Jennifer (Sal) Luca and Stephanie Capps; great-nephew, Michael (Arianne) Stecher; great-great nieces and great-great nephews; and her second family, Pastor Nathan, Diane, Meredith, and Matthew Anderson. Preceded in death by parents and sister, Irene Capps. Catherine's family thanks Dr. Alexander Potermin and the staff of The Cottages for the care they provided Catherine over the past three years. Memorial Visitation Thursday, August 31, 10 a.m., Celebration of Life, 11 a.m. followed by a Luncheon (all invited) at Evangelical Lutheran Church of All Saints, 5800 State Park Rd., Fox Lake. Private urn burial, Mt. Olive Cemetery, Chicago.  In lieu of flowers, memorials to Dawes Elementary School, St. Philip Lutheran Church, or Evangelical Lutheran Church of All Saints, appreciated.
