Betty Ann Smith (nee Schoener), 70, a longtime resident of Fox Lake, unexpectedly passed away Friday, July 11, 2025, at Advocate Condell Medical Center, Libertyville. She was born October 3, 1954, in Marinette, WI.
A 1973 graduate of Marinette Central Catholic High School in Marinette, she went on to receive a bachelor's degree in physical education from the University of Wisconsin, Madison and a bachelor's degree in fire-service management from Southern Illinois University. Betty was currently a security associate for the Chicago Cubs. Previously, she worked for 21 years as the secretary for the Fox Lake Sewer and Water Department and 33 years as a Lieutenant with the Fox Lake Fire Department (first female to serve in that role), retiring from both in 2018. She was past secretary of the Fox Lake Volunteer Fire Department Social Club, past paramedic for Great America, Certified Illinois State Paramedic since 1987, certified Illinois Fire Instructor, certified Illinois Officer III, lifetime member of the UW Alumni and UW Band Clubs. She loved reading mystery novels, especially ones by Stephen King, and was a big "Packer Backer".
Survived by her beloved husband, Robert "Bob" Smith, Jr., whom she married September 10, 1988; brother-in-law, Kevin (Teri) Smith; sister-in-law, Michelle Mathia; five nieces and nephews; a great niece and great nephew; and many friends and colleagues.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Lucille (nee Pecha) Schoener; and mother- and father-in-law, Robert Sr. and Shirley J. Smith.
Visitation Saturday, August 2, from 12 noon until the time of funeral service at 4 p.m., at Hamsher Lakeside Funerals & Cremations, 12 N. Pistakee Lake Rd., Fox Lake. Private interment Fort Sheridan National Cemetery, Lake Bluff.
