Axel O. Ullberg's Obituary

Axel Ullberg pushed away from the dock into his next great adventure with grace and humor on July 10, 2013. Carpenter, inventor, ingenious problem-solver, boater, pilot, and renowned gentle soul, the long-time pillar of the Chain of Lakes Community was born in Chicago on March 22, 1928 to Oli and Ruth (nee Erickson) Ullberg. A veteran of the US Army, he joined near the end of Word War II right out of high school and trained as a snow ski paratrooper in the Pathfinder Division of the 11th Airborne. He served actively in Japan before suffering a severe duty-related paratrooping injury. He overcame immense physical obstacles to return home and defy doctors by not only walking but running, dancing, bicycling, skiing and playing on foot and on vehicles of all kinds. He enjoyed 64 years of marriage with the love of his life, Evelyn (nee Larson) Ullberg who survives him along with his dear children Lars and Erik, beloved grandchildren Jessica and Carter, and many inspiring nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister Vera Marchel (nee Ullberg) and her husband Ferdinand Marchel, and by his sister in-law Sonja Davis (nee Larson) and her husband Chuck. Visitation will be held at K.K. Hamsher Funeral Home in Fox Lake on Sunday, July 14, 2013 from 5-9pm with services starting at 7pm.
