Aloysius "Al" Stanislaus Gort, 95, of McHenry, formerly a longtime resident of Fox Lake and Ingleside, unexpectedly passed away Friday, December 16, 2022, at home. He was born June 7, 1927, in Chicago, to the late Aloise and Vallie (nee Kozakiewicz) Gort, and married the late Helen V. Zak on August 10, 1947, at St. Mary's of the Angels Church, Chicago.
Al was a veteran of the United States Marines Corps and WWII, having served in the Pacific Theater. He began his professional career as a salesman for the Fuller Brush Company, and went on to have a successful, inside/outside salesman position with Sears, Fox Lake, for 35 years.
Active in the community, Al served as past President of the Fox Lake Lions Club and past Lions District 1F Governor, receiving a Melvin Jones Fellowship in recognition of his service and dedication. He was also a former member of St. Peter's Catholic Church Spring Grove and Our Lady of the Lakes-St. Bede Catholic Church, where he was a choir member, usher, Eucharistic minister, and volunteer, and regularly attended The Church of the Holy Apostles, McHenry. As a Marine, he continued his service by being very involved with the annual Toys for Tots program.
Al is survived by children, Christine (the late Richard) Maslowe of Puerta Vallarta, Mexico; James (the late Gladys) of Fox Lake, Elizabeth (Steven) Novelen of Lake Havasu, AZ, Joseph (Julianne) of Spring Grove, and David (Cindy) of Spring Grove; 22 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; his special friend and companion, Ellen Givens; son-in-law, William Triggs; and by many beloved nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
In addition to his wife, Helen, Al was preceded in death by children, Allen Gort, Susan Pfad, and Mary Triggs; granddaughter, Helen; and siblings, Ray (Martha) and Gene (Rosemary) Gort, and Adella (Robert) Kroenig.
A visitation will be held from 4 p.m., until the time of the wake service at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, December 21, at Hamsher Lakeside Funerals & Cremations, 12 N. Pistakee Lake Rd., Fox Lake. Visitation will continue Thursday, December 22, from 9 a.m., until the time of prayers at 9:30 a.m. at the funeral home. A 10 a.m. Mass will follow at Our Lady of the Lakes-St. Bede Church, 36455 N. Wilson Rd., Ingleside. Burial will be in Grant Cemetery, Ingleside.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in Al's name to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation , St. Jude Children's Research Hospital , Toys for Tots , or the Lions Foundation of Illinois appreciated.
